AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field team begins its road to the 2021 NCAA Track & Field Championships this weekend at the NCAA West Preliminaries, host by Texas A&M. Action at E.B. Cushing Stadium in College Station will take place from Wednesday through Saturday. A complete schedule for Iowa State is located at the bottom of the preview.

The goal of this weekend is to finish in the top-12 to earn a ticket to the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Oregon on June 6-9 in Eugene at the new Hayward Field.
Iowa State will have 22 entries in action looking to make that trip in two weeks to Eugene. The Cyclones have a bunch of previous NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships experience to the table, with five members of the current Cyclone crew having previously made it through the Preliminaries rounds successfully. Eric Fogltanz and Roshon Roomes will be looking for a third-straight Outdoor Championships trips, with Fogltanz having made it in 2018 and 2019 in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay team. Roomes was part of both 4x400s as well, and added his individual event, the 800m run. He was joined at the 2019 Championships in the 800m run by Festus Lagat, who will be looking to make a repeat visit. Lagat broke ISU's 800m school record en route to a third-place finish in 2019, clocking in at 1:45.05.
Edwin Kurgat will be another Cyclone looking for a third NCAA Outdoor Championships trip, going up to 10,000m this weekend after making it at 5,000m in 2018 and 2019. Kurgat will be joined in the 10K on Wednesday night by 2021 Big 12 Outdoor Performer of the Year Wesley Kiptoo, who is entered in both the 10K and Friday night's 5,000m run. Thomas Pollard will join the duo in the 10,000m run on Wednesday, while Ezekiel Rop will be in the 5,000m with Kiptoo on Friday.
Vlad Pavlenko is the other Cyclone looking for a repeat trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as the Cyclones' school record holder in the hammer throw heads into Wednesday's competition as the No. 4 seed in the field.
All four of the Iowa State women in action this weekend will be looking for first career trips to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The school record holder in the discus, Emily March, enters as the highest seed at No. 6 for Saturday's competition, while Big 12 5K/10K champion Cailie Logue will be focusing on the 10,000m run on Thursday night and is the No. 10 seed. Abby Caldwell and Janette Schraft, the Big 12 silver and bronze medalists, respectively, take on the steeplechase on Saturday evening.
