EUGENE, Oregon – Festus Lagat finished his ISU career with a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run, garnering First Team All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field. Lagat added four points to ISU's team score to lead the Cyclone effort, while Wesley Kiptoo added his second Second Team All-America honor of the week with his 13th place finish in the 5,000-meter run.
Lagat's four points today along with Vlad Pavlenko's five points for his fourth-place in the hammer throw on Wednesday gave the Cyclones nine for the Championships and put ISU 33rd in the final team standings.
In the 800-meter final, Lagat stuck to the rear of the field for the first lap as the field went out at a fast pace. The Cyclone was able to keep the majority of the field within range, and was able to move up some spots in the second half of the race to his eventual final slot of fifth in 1:46.33.
Lagat is now a five-time All-American in his ISU career, with Friday's effort being his third First Team All-America performance, and his second-straight outdoors at 800m after his third-place in 2019.
In the men's 5,000-meter run, Kiptoo once again went to the front of the race at the start, a slot that he held for the first half of the race. However, like on Wednesday, the second half of the race saw Kiptoo unable to hang onto the face pace of the race as he ended up eventually finishing in his final slot of 13th place in 13:30.87.
Kiptoo finishes his first season at Iowa State with four All-America honors, earning them in cross country, First Team honors indoors at 5,000m and his two outdoor Second Team All-America nods. During the season, he picked up school records in four events, claiming the indoor 3,000 meters and anchoring for the school-record DMR and taking down records outdoors in the 10,000 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase.
