AMES, Iowa – Ruby Chou is now the fifth Cyclone to be named the Iowa Golf Association's 2022 Iowa Women's Player of the Year.
During the spring portion of the team's season, Chou placed in a tie for 15th at the Big 12 Championship to give her a push up the player of the year leaderboard. Chou carded back-to-back rounds of 77 and a first round 70 to earn her top-15 finish.
"I put in extra time during practice," Chou said. "I put lots of effort in to work on all the things that will help me improve. Patience was an important things for me to remember while I was preparing for the tournaments."
Following the Big 12 Match Play, Ruby joined Taglao Jeeravivitaporn as the first two Cyclones to individually qualify for the Women's NCAA Championship. Out of the NCAA Stanford Regional, Chou finished 7th overall with rounds of 68, 73, and a 70 on the last day.
Confidence was growing in Chou with the Iowa Women's Match Play Championship up next on her schedule. Chou claimed the No. 4 seed in the stroke play portion of the championship and was able to knock off opponents early to earn quarterfinalist honors.
Next, Chou capped off her run at Iowa history at the Iowa Women's Amateur Championship. Sister, Joy Chou, was previously crowned champion in 2021, and one of Chou's goals was to join her sister on the famous Fladoos Trophy.
As the final putt dropped into the hole, Chou had earned the 2022 Iowa Women's Amateur title and a spot next to her sister's name on the trophy. Chou was congratulated by everyone, including her sister who could only communicate through smiles.
"I did it," said Chou. "I did set goals for myself this year to make it to nationals and win the Iowa Women's Amateur Championship and I actually succeeded and play well for all three tournaments!"
Chou will now join Kristin Paulson, Katie Gustafson, Leanne Smith and recent Cyclone graduate Amelia Mehmet-Grohn as Iowa Women's Player of the Year champions.
