TOPEKA, Kan. – Iowa State swimmers continue their battle for the Kansas Classic title on Saturday, sitting only nine points behind hosts Kansas heading into the final day of competition on Sunday. Gabrielle LePine was victorious in the 100 breast event, securing the lone individual event win of the night, in addition to the first-place wins by the 200 medley and 800 free relay teams.
LePine raced to a time of 1:02.98 in the 100 breast 'A' finals, landing first place. The freshman dropped her prelims time by .64 seconds to become No. 12 on the top performers list, which is her third time moving up the list this season.
"We had time drops from this morning and a number of personal best times," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "It was fun to watch Gabrielle LePine win her first big collegiate invitational. Our depth was incredible in both the 100 breast and 100 back."
The Cyclones didn't hesitate to get day two underway with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.42. The team of Sophia Goushchina, LePine, Carley Caughron, and Trinity Sadecky just missed out on ISU's all-time top ten by 0.28 seconds.
Lucia Rizzo, Brinley Horras, Corinne Guist, and Ashley Bengtson contributed to the 800 free relay, notching first place with a time of 7:22.62. Their time marks the eighth-fastest time in school history.
"A highlight swim was Ashley Bengtson's 800 free relay split, where she went 1:48.81 and she's never been that fast before," Sorenson observed. "That was a big standout swim for us."
In the 400 IM 'A' finals, Rizzo led the pack to second place with a time of 4:22.56, trimming down her prelims time by 1.29 seconds. Fallon DeWitt notched fourth place with 4:25.92 and Sydney Jackson in fifth with 4:26.34.
Caughron improved her prelims time to 55.69 in the 100 fly 'A' finals, placing in fifth. She bumped up her top performance status from No. 18 in the morning session to No. 17. Trinity Kay placed first in the 100 fly 'B' finals swimming at 56.03 seconds. Coming in behind was Rizzo who touched the wall at 58.78, landing 16th place overall.
Bengtson tallied herself a commanding 200 free 'A' finals time of 1:50.04 for third. Horras (1:52.44, sixth) and Guist (1:53.12, seventh) aided in filling the pool with Cyclones in the championship heat. The 200 free swimmers helped add team points to the Cyclones overall score.
Paige Hanley established a time of 1:04.25 and a sixth-place finish in the 100 breast 'A' finals. Alaina Breitbach placed eighth notching a time of 1:05.21. In the 'B' finals, Madison Rundell placed third with a time of 1:05.61.
