AMES, Iowa – Lucia Rizzo was one of Iowa State's leaders in helping the Cyclones win last week's Kansas Classic and she was rewarded for that work by being named Big 12 Women's Co-Swimmer of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. The award is Rizzo's first of the season and third of her career, having previously picked up honors on Feb. 3, 2021 and Dec. 15, 2021.
A fifth-year senior, Rizzo earned a pair of victories over the week, claiming the win in the 200 IM on Friday, and leading off for the Cyclones' victorious 800 free relay team on Saturday. In addition, she was second in the 400 IM, third in the 200 butterfly, fourth as part of the 400 medley relay, seventh anchoring the 400 free relay and 16th in the 100 butterfly.
Iowa State's school record holder in the 200 and 400 IM, Rizzo accounted for 78 team points across the three days of the Kansas Classic, helping the Cyclones defeat hosts KU and win the meet for the first time.
Rizzo and the Cyclone swimmers will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. at Iowa for the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series dual. The Cyclone divers will be back in action next weekend in Iowa City at the Hawkeye Invitational.
