URBANDALE, Iowa - No. 28 Iowa State beat No. 42 Wisconsin, 4-3, in an absolute thriller of a match Saturday afternoon to remain unbeaten at 10-0 and extend the best start in program history. The win also extends the Cyclones' home-winning streak to 22-straight matches, another school record. Wisconsin falls to 7-5 on the season.
The Badgers came out hot in doubles play, forcing the Cyclones to play from behind. Wisconsin held 2-0 leads on all three courts, but Iowa State battled hard to close the gap. At No. 3 doubles, Chie Kezuka and Ange Oby Kajuru won six out of the final seven games to beat Ariel Johnson and Ava Markham 6-3.
The doubles point would come down to Thasaporn Naklo & Christin Hsieh versus the 43rd-ranked pairing in the country, Xinyu Cai & Alina Mukhortova, after the Badgers took the win at court two. Despite an 3-0 deficit to start the match, the Cyclone pairing came back to force a tiebreaker but fell just short, losing 7-6 (3). It marked the first time the Cyclones lost the doubles point this season.
Naklo would get her revenge in singles play, quickly disposing of No. 111 Cai 6-3, 6-1 to tie the match up. Wisconsin responded with a win at No. 2 singles, but Anna Supapitch Kuearum tied it up again with her 6-3, 6-1 victory over Antonela Stoica.
After the Badgers won at court six to go up 3-2, the Cyclones were left with no room for error, but Miska Kadleckova came back from down 5-3 in the third set to beat Alina Mukhortova in an absolute battle to tie the score 3-3.
Chie Kezuka also found herself in a three-set grudge match with Taylor Cataldi. With Kadleckova's win, it was up to her to secure the win for the Cyclones; a position Kezuka is familiar with. As she usually does, Kezuka delivered, beating Cataldi 6-4 in the third set to give Iowa State its fourth-ranked win of the season.
Iowa State returns to Life Time Fitness tomorrow morning for another ranked matchup against No. 47 Memphis at 11:00 a.m.
