AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team wraps up the 2021-22 season with a dual record of 8-2 and conference record of 2-1. The team's eight wins tied for the most since the 2009-10 season as the squad turned in 45 all-time top performances and 34 top times or scores.
Senior Class
The seniors handed in 22 dual wins through the last four years, the fourth highest in school history including the abbreviated 2020-21 season. The amount sits one win off tying the second-best total of 23. The class led all others this season in points (733.5) and event wins (34). Five seniors solidified 31 All-Big 12 honors through their careers.
Conference Honors
Iowa State put up 18 All-Big 12 earning performances at the conference meet, the third most in a season. The amount brings the program total over 200 conference honors with 216.
Best Start in School History
For the first time, Iowa State went out to an 8-1 start as the Cyclones took both wins in the WVU and Villanova double dual.
Perfect on Road
The Cyclones battled to five wins away from Beyer Pool to stay perfect for the first time since the 1978-79 season. The feat is the second time in school history to tally a win each time and best since the 2013-14 squad claimed five victories and one tie on the road.
On the Boards
The divers end their campaign totaling 38 Zone cuts, a new program high. Four divers tallied a qualifying mark for the first time since 2015-16 and fifth time overall.
Michelle Schlossmacher Smith tallied 23 cuts, a single-season high leading into Zones and six shy from tying the season program high.
Breaststroke Legacy
Martha Haas and Lehr Thorson's legacies are etched into history as the duo holds 47.5 percent of the top 20 all-time times throughout the 100 and 200 breast. Haas and Thorson also account for seven of the top 10 times in the 100 and six 200 top-10 times.
Haas swam to her first career NCAA 'B' cuts this season as she concludes her historic career with four. The Minnetonka, Minn. native became the first to swim to a 'B' cut in the 200 breast since 2015-16. Thorson owns seven 'B' cuts, all in the 100 breast, and 14 all-time top times.
Records
Schlossmacher Smith notched herself both a school and a pool record in her final season. The senior dove to a platform PR and Beyer Pool record of 249.25 against TCU and an all-time program high on the three-meter with 348.83 on Senior Day against Kansas.
Big 12 Awards
Swimmers and divers posted the highest amount of weekly honors in program history with nine, toppling the previous high of four set in both the 2013-14 and 2015-16 seasons. Schlossmacher Smith (diver, three times), Ashley Bengtson (swimmer), Carley Caughron (newcomer, twice), Lucia Rizzo (swimmer), Haas (swimmer) and Winter Craig (newcomer) all earned accolades.
Schlossmacher Smith finalizes her career with four conference weekly honors, one behind the highest career total by any Cyclone.
