FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 34 Iowa State fell to No. 4 Texas, 4-0, Friday morning in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals on the campus of TCU.
The Cyclones (16-6) battled valiantly but came up short against the Longhorns (18-4).
Iowa State dropped the doubles point in heartbreaking fashion.
After UT cruised to a win at No. 1 doubles, Ange Oby Kajuru and Chie Kezuka evened things up with a convincing, 6-1, win over the Longhorn pair of Vivian Ovrootsky and Sabina Zeynalova. It was the Cyclone duo's ninth-straight win as they improved to 17-2 overall and 9-1 against foes from the Big 12 this spring.
Sofia Cabezas and Miska Kadleckova fell behind 4-1 in the deciding match at No. 2 doubles before rallying to knot things up at 5-5. Unfortunately, for the Cyclone pair, Texas' #72 team of Charlotte Chavatipon and Kylie Collins took the next two games to secure the doubles point for UT.
In singles action, UT claimed three points to win the match, but ISU was able to force a third set at No. 3 and No. 5 before the Longhorns earned the victory.
The Cyclones now await their NCAA Tournament fate, which will be announced on Monday, May 2 at 5:30 p.m. (CT) on NCAAsports.com.
