CARY, North Carolina – In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, No. 32 Iowa State fell to No. 28 South Carolina, 4-0. The Cyclones finish the season with a 16-7 record.
The Cyclones battled, forcing a tiebreaker in doubles play, however, Ange Oby Kajuru and Chie Kezuka would eventually give way resulting in a one-point lead for the Gamecocks going into singles play.
Highlighting the outing for Iowa State was Sofia Cabezas and Miska Kadleckova defeating their nationally-ranked opponents in doubles action. The pair took on 25th-ranked Sarah Hamner and Misa Malkin, defeating them comfortably by way of a 6-4 victory.
Despite the effort in doubles, the Cyclones struggled to gain momentum against South Carolina. No. 56 Thasaporn Naklo would be the first to fall, losing to 6th-ranked Sarah Hamner.
Kezuka and Kadleckova each held leads at No. 5 and No. 3 singles, respectively, when the match was completed.
Although the season may not have ended the way head coach Boomer Saia and his team wanted, there was a lot to be proud of for the Cyclones. It's just the second time Iowa State has made the NCAA Tournament in program history, with the first time coming last season. Additionally, Iowa State has consistently been ranked, coming into the match today as the No. 32 team in the country. Iowa State also had two singles players ranked, No. 89 Kajuru and No. 56 Naklo.
Kezuka set the program record for conference wins with eight total Big 12 singles victories. Kezuka and Kajuru would also end conference play with All-Big 12 honors. Kajuru was awarded All-Big 12 Second Team singles and part of the All-Big 12 Freshman Team. Aside from setting a new school record, Kezuka would finish the year as the No. 5 Individual Singles Champion. The duo was also named All-Big 12 Second Team doubles and were the No. 3 Doubles Champions.
Thasaporn Naklo will be participating in the NCAA Division 1 Women's Tennis Singles Championship later this month. Competition will begin May 23rd.
