AMES, Iowa – Iowa State sophomore Thasaporn Naklo will make history next week when she becomes the first Cyclone tennis player to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships at the University of Illinois' Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex May 23-28.
Naklo will open against Virginia's Elaine Chervinsky, who she defeated earlier this season, 7-6 (3), 6-4, at ITA Fall National Championships. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday evening.
The field features 64 players and all matches will be best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches.
Naklo earned an at-large bid to the singles championship after going 22-12 this season. The Bangkok, Thailand, native has seven ranked wins this season, including three wins against other players in the field.
Naklo is two wins shy of becoming just the 17th player in school history to win 100 total matches (singles and doubles) in her career. She has the second-most victories at No. 1 singles in school history (25), trailing only Erin Karonis' 40 wins.
Naklo started the season strong, winning her bracket at the Kitty Harrison Invite and then capturing the singles title at the ITA Central Region Tournament to become the first Cyclone to advance to the ITA Fall National Championships.
TennisOne will provide live streaming and live results for the championship.
