BEATRICE, Neb. – Iowa State sophomore Luke Gutschewski recently qualified for the U.S. Amateur by winning at a qualifying event.
Gutschewski dominated the field at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier on July 18 at the Beatrice Country Club, as he won the event by five strokes. In the opening round, Gutschewski shot a 64 and followed that with a 69 in the second round. He was the only golfer in the field with two rounds in the 60's, while his 64 was the lowest recorded score. The top two individuals qualified for the U.S. Amateur.
By qualifying, Gutschewski will be one of 312 competitors in the field Aug. 15-21 at the 122nd U.S. Amateur at The Ridgewood Country Club and Arcola Country Club in Paramus, N.J. Ridgewood Country Club was home to the Ryder Cup in 1935, the 1974 U.S. Amateur and the 1990 U.S. Senior Open.
Play will consist of 18 holes of stroke play both Aug. 15 & 16, with the top 64 scorers after 36 holes advancing to match play. Â The round of 64 for match play will be on Aug. 17, while round of 32 action will be Aug. 18 The quarterfinals will be Aug. 19, with the semifinals on Aug. 20. The championship match, over 36 holes, will be on Aug. 21.
Under Iowa State Head Coach Andrew Tank, Gutschewski will be the ninth different Cyclone to play in the U.S. Amateur. Most recently, Frank Lindwall played in the event in 2021, while Tripp Kinney and Lachlan Barker participated in 2020.
