Iowa State Finishes Second At The Zach Johnson Invitational

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's golf team put together a 13-under-par final round to place second at the Zach Johnson Invitational in West Des Moines, IA. The squad's final round 271 is the fifth-lowest 18-hole score in program history.
"Today was super encouraging; I saw a lot of great things out there today," shared Head Coach Andrew Tank. "It was nice to see some different guys having a good round, but we just need a little more consistency from top to bottom. We made a run at it, but we had a pretty big gap to close. It was fun to be in contention."
This week, the team was led by freshman Paul Beauvy and Luke Gutschewski. The two Cyclones concluded their weeks with second place finishes at six-under-par, five back from the leader.
Beauvy fired the sixth lowest 18-hole score in school history with a six-under 65 in the final round. In his round, Beauvy stayed patient and had a late stretch of six birdies in eight holes that began on hole 12.Â
"The main thing was I was patient today," Beauvy said. "I was even after my first ten holes, but I stayed patient and tried to fight. I made all my putts today, so that felt amazing. I know that we were doing well as a team, and I wanted to do my best."
Gutschewski carded a 66 in two of the three rounds this week, which tied his season best. He also knocked in 14 birdies and one eagle in the first round.
Lukas Pany joined Gutschewski and Beauvy with a top-five finish. Pany set his career-low round each day as he carded rounds of 71, 69 and a final round 68.
"Lukas has been working hard, so this was sort of a breakthrough performance for him to finish the way he did," stated Tank.
Kyo Morishita and Nate Vance rounded out the Cyclones' top-five. Morishita placed in a tie for 25th, and Vance finished in a tie for 30th. Morishita had a 222 54-hole total, and Vance posted a 224 tally.
Next up for the Cyclones, the team will head to Milwaukee, Wis., for the Marquette Intercollegiate, starting on Oct. 2.
