IOWA CITY, Iowa - Day two of the Hawkeye Invite saw the Cyclones set new personal bests across several events, including a top five all time performance in the 3-meter diving finals.Â
Lauren Kimball had an all-time performance in the 3-meter diving finals. Kimball scored a 325.30, beating her personal best by over 20 points, to secure first-place in her second event for the Cyclones at the Hawkeye Invite.Â
"She's been putting in a lot of time with all of our staff, which is a big part of her being successful. However, she's the one that puts it all together with these strong performances and I couldn't be more pleased with what she has done." head diving coach Jeff Warrick said.Â
Kimball's score puts her at fourth all-time in the 3-meter dive, only behind Michelle Schlossmacher Smith (348.33), Tien Tran (338.55), and Elyse Brouillette (329.48).Â
In the 3-meter dive prelims, the Cyclones had three of the top-four divers. Lauren Kimball (297.0) finished in second, Kate Mitchell finished in third with a personal best of 291.95, and Ally Blumenfeld (289.05) finished in fourth.Â
"We've been diving at a high level of consistency at an early point in the season," Warrick said. "That's been a lot of fun to watch and they have been ready to go at every event this season."Â
Iowa State started the swimming events off in strong fashion with a third-place finish in the 200 Medley relay. The team of Emma Kuhn, Alaina Breitbach, Carley Caughron, and Andie Quirke secured a time of 1:41.15, the best 200 Medley relay time of the season.Â
Caughron would follow up that performance with a first-place finish in the 'B' final of the 100 fly at a time of 55.05. Winter Craig placed first in the 'C' final at a 56.40 finishing time.Â
In the 400 IM, Fallon DeWitt finished fourth in the 'B' final with a 4:25.01 time.Â
Brinley Horras led the Cyclones in the 200 free with an 11th place finish at a time of 1:51.01. Corinne Guist followed close behind Horras with a 1:52.80 finish that had her end in 14th place overall.Â
Paige Hanley (1:04.48) and Alaina Breitbach (1:05.10) had seventh and eighth place overall finishes respectively in the 100 breaststroke final to cap a solid day for both swimmers in the event.
In the 100 backstroke finals, Kuhn put up a new personal best of 56.82 to finish in 11th place overall. Maddie Ziegert (57.29) closed the night in 15th place.Â
"We didn't have the best morning in the prelim swims, but we came back in the finals and raced a lot better in a number of events." head coach Duane Sorenson said.
Â
Iowa State finished off the night with a fourth place finish in the 800 freestyle relay. The relay team of Guist, Horras, Quirke, and Sydney Jackson finished with a time of 7:27.40.Â
Day three of the Hawkeye Invite will feature the first look at the 1650 freestyle for the swimming team.
"I am looking forward to the 1650 free since our team has a lot of strong distance swimmers that have a chance of performing well in that event." Sorenson said.Â
The diving team will have their first chance to perform at the platform dive in the morning session Saturday.Â
"We've had a lot of practice at the platform dives in our home pool where we've worked up on our ability to perform there." Warrick said. "Tomorrow will give us a good look at how consistent we can be there and a starting point for places to improve."
