AMES, Iowa – Iowa State began the ISU Holiday Invite with multi-events and the weight throw. Kole Becker marked the day sitting in first after day one of the heptathlon while Amari Laing had an top 10 all-time ISU performance in the long jump.
The day began with the women's weight throw, with both Iowa State throwers posting personal records. Nebraska transger Betty Rosvold finished fourth in her first outing as a Cyclone with a best throw of 55-6 1/2 (16.93m). Ella O'Neall locked up sixth with 51-1 3/4 (15.59m).
On the men's side Daniel Norris, competing unattached, finished third in the weight throw with a throw of 61-7 3/4 (18.79m) which would be the eighth-best performance in ISU history. The top finisher for the Cyclones was Blake Veenstra who put up a new personal best of 59-9 3/4 (18.23m).
Becker had a strong showing in his first competition for the Cyclones, completing the first day of the heptathlon with 3,060 points to sit in first. Becker began the day with a time of 7.20 in the 60-meter dash, following that up with a long jump mark of 23-6 1/4 (7.17m) to tie for second. The next event was the shot put, where Becker had a personal best of 44-2 3/4 (13.48m) to place third in the event and move up to first in the overall standings with 2,364 points. Becker ended his day with third place in the high jump, clearing 6-2 (1.88m) to keep hold of the top standing overall.
Arkansas transfer Macy Owens started her day in the pentathlon with the victory in 60m hurdles, crossing the line first in 9.02. Freshman Laing took seventh in 9.67. Owens would go on to take second in the shot put with a new personal best of 36-2 3/4 (11.04m) to go up in the overall standings to second with 2,159 points. Laing posted third-place finishes in both the high jump and shot put to sit right behind Owens in the standings three events in with 2,123.
With the long jump and 800m remaining in the pentathlon, Sydney Willits, competing unattached, improved on her indoor personal record with 20-11 3/4 (6.39m) to win the event. Willits' Iowa State personal record of 20-9 1/4 ranks fourth in Iowa State history. Laing continued to impress, placing second with 19-9 1/2 (6.03m), tying the 10th-best performance in ISU indoor history.
Owens closed the pentathlon with 3,346 points to secure second overall, while Laing cemented fourth in her first-career pentathlon 3,297 points.
The ISU Holiday Invite continues tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with the heptathlon 60m hurdles.
