AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State finished day two of the Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships in third with 193 points. Four Cyclones medaled, ten recorded personal records and nine amends to the record book marked the day.
Lucia Rizzo earned All-Big 12 First Team honors in the 200 IM 'A' finals with a fourth-place finish in 1:59.73. The senior broke her own school record holding-time, trimming down by nearly a second. This marks her second career first team honor in the event.
"We're very excited for Lucia getting the school record, yet again," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "It was just an outstanding swim."
Trinity Kay made the second Cyclone 'A' finals appearance in the 200 IM as she cemented her third career All-Big 12 honor, touching the wall at 2:00.31 for sixth. Her performance is tied with Lauren Breunig for the third-fastest time in program history.
Brinley Horras was the last medalist of the evening session as she raced to a 500 free time of 4:53.00 to place seventh in the championship finals. Horras became a four-time All-Big 12 honoree with the finish.
In 500 free 'B' finals, Corinne Guist, Madison Rundell, Sydney Jackson, and Ashley Bengtson all improved their prelims times by recording new personal records, placing 10-11-12-13th, respectively. Guist timed in at 4:53.67 while moving up on the top performers list to No. 12. Rundell, now the 14th fastest swimmer with 4:54.66 is followed up by her teammates Jackson with 4:54.81 for No. 15 on the top performers list and Bengtson with 4:54.89 for No. 16 on the top performers list.
Scoring for the Cyclones in 200 IM finals was Fallon DeWitt and Alaina Breitbach. DeWitt put her hand to the wall at 2:05.50 while recording a PR for 14th place and Breitbach neared her PR with 2:07.05 for 16th.
Carley Caughron and Sophia Goushchina each nailed new personal bests in the 50 free consolation finals while jumping up slots on the top performers list. Now the eighth fastest swimmer in school history, Caughron notched a time of 23.23 for 10th place. Goushchina followed directly behind the sophomore, placing in 11th with 23.35. Her performance now sits at No. 13 in program history.
In 200 IM 'C' finals, Mallory Miller cut .57 seconds off her PR set in the morning session. Miller touched 19th with 2:04.91. Swimming alongside Miller was Emily Heymans as she stopped the clock at 2:05.99 for 22nd.
Gabrielle LePine was the lone swimmer in the 50 free 'C' finals as she secured a time of 23.81 for 22nd place.
Day two closed out with the 400 medley relay team consisting of Goushchina, LePine, Kay, and Caughron handing in the third-fastest time in school history of 3:40.23, finishing in fifth.
"I was very proud of our team today," Sorenson said. "We swam great in the prelims and came back with dropped times or we moved up a number of places."
PRELIMS
Twelve swimmers notched new PRs while three locked up slots in scoring finals in the morning session. In the 500 free, Brinley Horras took the lead for the Cyclones with a time of 4:53.32. Four freestylers also improved their then-PR's including freshman Corinne Guist, who posted a time of 4:54.40, Sydney Jackson with 4:55.17, Madison Rundell with 4:55.54, and Ashley Bengtson with 4:57.64.
Lucia Rizzo's 200 IM 'A' finals qualifying time of 2:01.23 was 1.1 seconds off her then-PR and school record. Trinity Kay joined her with a PR of 2:01.66. Also recording new personal best times were Mallory Miller (2:05.48), Fallon DeWitt (2:06.14), and Paige Hanley (2:09.26).
The 50 freestylers continued the trend of adjusting PRs as Sophia Goushchina dropped her time by 0.4 seconds with 23.38. Gabrielle LePine claimed a new PR of 23.79, Trinity Sadecky picked up a time of 23.98, and Jasmine Weiland followed with 25.01.
The Championship continues tomorrow with 3-meter diving, the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 200 free relay. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Both prelims and finals will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
