IOWA CITY, Iowa – No. 4 Iowa State (10-2) defeated No. 40 Iowa (4-4) in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series Friday in Iowa City. It marks the first time Cyclones have won in Iowa City since 1976 and is the third-straight victory against the Hawkeyes for ISU and head coach Boomer Saia.
After a huge jump in the rankings, junior Miska Kadleckova also moved up in singles to the No. 3 spot. The junior earned her 12th-straight dual victory, and moves up to tie Meghan Cassens for all-time wins at the No. 3 spot, with 24.
"We moved her to three today, she deserved that opportunity. She's really locked in, it's really fun to watch," Saia said. "She's done a really good job of turning it on as soon as she walks on to the court."
Iowa State now leads the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, 15-6, following today's win. The Cyclones have clinched the competition in consecutive seasons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Iowa State earned the doubles point with wins on the second and third courts.
Ange Oby Kajuru and Xinyi Nong picked up their fourth victory with a win over Samantha Mannix and Pia Kranholdt, 6-1, and improved to 4-1 together this season.
At the No. 1 spot, No. 39 Thasaporn Naklo and Anna Supapitch Kuearum struggled to build any momentum, dropping their match to Daianne Hayashida and Vipasha Mehra, 6-1.
Clinching the doubles point for the Cyclones was Kadleckova and Sofia Cabezas. The duo improved to 12-3 together this year with a win over Anya Lamoreaux and Barbara Pokorna, 6-2.
Kajuru was the first to finish for the Cyclones in singles at the No. 2 spot. The sophomore quickly defeated Mehra, 6-1, 6-1, giving Iowa State another point in the team score.
Finishing right after Kajuru was Kadleckova at the No. 3 spot. The Banska Bystrica, Slovakia native earned her singles dual victory with a, 6-1, 6-1, win over Mannix.
Clinching the match for Iowa State was senior Chie Kezuka at the No. 6 singles spot. Kezuka took down Lamoreaux with a final score of, 6-2, 6-1.
"That was one of the messages this week, this is a building that we have not had too much success in," said Saia. "To come in and roll up our sleeves and find a way to win the doubles point and then carry that into singles, I was super proud."
The Cyclones return to action Friday, March 10 when they open Big 12 play against Kansas in Ames at 1 p.m.
