AMES, Iowa – Iowa State will send three to the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships held March 10-11 in Albuquerque, N.M. Cam Jones earned his spot in the weight throw while Jason Gómez and Cebastian Gentil qualified in the 800-meter run.
Jones threw 76-4 1/4 (23.27m) on his way to becoming the first weight throw Big 12 Champion in Iowa State history. Jones downed his own school record of 72-11 1/4 (22.23) set earlier this season as the sophomore passed 70 feet in five of six rounds. The mark also bested all competitors by over five feet and is the fourth-best nationally.
The Marion, Iowa native is just the third Cyclone weight thrower to advance to indoor championships for the men, joining previous school-record holder Vlad Pavlenko (2019) and Jamie Beyer (1997).
Gómez and Gentil both clocked their sub-1:47 qualifying time at the Tyson Invite on Feb. 11. Gómez ran to 1:46.53, the second-fastest in school history, while Gentil also had an indoor personal best of 1:46.75 to rank at No. 3 in ISU history. Nationally, Gómez enters NCAA Indoor Championships with the fourth-fastest time and Gentil with the eighth-fastest.
Gómez advances to indoor nationals in the event for the second time of his career while Gentil advances for the first time. Iowa State is one of two schools to have multiple entries in the 800m.
The 2023 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships take place March 10-11 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
