SAN DIEGO, California – Thai Thompson and Sydney Willits claimed the victory in the multi-events to close out action at the Aztec Invitational Friday. Thompson set the San Diego State facility record with his decathlon score of 6,866 points, topping the previous record of 6,204.
Thompson put up six victories and three personal records through the decathlon to end ahead of the competitors with 6,866 points. In the heptathlon, Willits took the title with an overall score of 4,931. Willits won the 200-meter dash and posted two PRs through the two days of competition.
Thompson posted his third personal best of the decathlon as he competed in the pole vault Friday, clearing 14-5 1/4 (4.40m) to remain in the lead in the overall standings. Thompson closed out his 10th event with a win of 4:45.35 in the 1,500-meter, just two seconds off his PR.
The second day of the heptathlon began with Iowa State taking the top three placements in the long jump. Kiersten Fisher led ISU to the victory with a personal best of 19-1 1/2 (5.83m), Willits placed second with a jump of 18-10 1/2 (5.75m) and Ava Cinnamo third with 18-8 3/4 (5.71m).
Both Cinnamo and Fisher competed dominantly, going out to top-10 program performances as they competed in the heptathlon for the first time of their careers. Freshman Cinnamo finished fourth overall with 4,780 points, the seventh-best performance in ISU history. Fisher totaled 4,618 points, now ranking as the 10th-best Iowa State performance.
Next week, the Cyclones will have a split weekend at the Texas Relays March 30 through April 1 while the distance squad heads to the Stanford Invitational March 31 through April 1.
