AMES, Iowa – Thai Thompson and Sydney Willits have been named Big 12 Athletes of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. The duo sweeps the Big 12 weekly awards after each earning multi-event titles at the Aztec Invitational for Iowa State's first conference honors of the season.
Iowa State sweeps the weekly awards for the first time in program history. This is Thompson's first-career Big 12 honor and Iowa State's seventh outdoor weekly award on the men's side since the award's 2002 introduction. Willits earns her first-career Big 12 honor and the first for the Iowa State women since 2017. ISU now totals nine outdoor awards on the women's side.
Thompson won the decathlon, scoring 6,866 points through the 10 events to currently lead the nation. The junior recorded six victories and personal records in the pole vault, shot put and 400-meter dash.
Willits grabbed the victory in the heptathlon with 4,931 through the seven events, the current No. 4 mark in the nation and No. 1 mark in the Big 12 this season. The sophomore won the 200m dash and notched personal bests in the 200m dash and 100m hurdles while coming 65 points off the meet record.
