AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State began day one at the Texas Relays with 400-meter hurdles, the 800m run and javelin. Zach Podraza highlighted the day notching the third-best javelin mark in school history.
Podraza kicked off action for the Cyclones notching a new javelin personal record in just his second meet as a Cyclone. The senior started the day at No. 7 on the ISU all-time list with 211-03 and improved on that mark with two of his attempts through the event. Podraza now ranks at No. 3 with 223-10 (68.23m) as he finished fourth in Section B Finals.
In the 800m invitational, freshman Makayla Clark came .31 seconds off her lifetime best with 2:08.28. On the men's side, both Peter Smith and Jason Gómez went sub-1:50 as Smith led the Cyclones with 1:48.38 for seventh, .33 seconds off his PR. Gómez clocked 1:49.06 for 12th.
Zakiyah Amos nearly clocked a time under a minute in 400m hurdles with 1:00.56. The senior won her heat, going on to finalize eighth overall in timed finals.
Freshman Alec Carr also won his heat in men's 400m hurdles with a time 54.93, improving on his time set in his outdoor debut at the UCF Invite of 56.37. Carr finished 28th in timed finals.
Competition tomorrow is scheduled to begin at 9:35 a.m. CT at the Texas Relays. Men and women are entered in hurdling events and relays while men take on the shot put and discus. The Cyclone distance squad will also be in action tomorrow as the Stanford Invitational kicks off.
