CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Iowa State freshman women's golfer Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn has been named a co-recipient of the WGCA National Freshman of the Year Presented by StrackaLine, sharing the honor with Florida State's Lottie Woad.
Chul-Ak-Sorn recently finished her freshman campaign, turning in one of the best seasons in school history. Her 70.56 stroke average is the best in school history, topping teammate Taglao Jeeravivitaporn's 72.11 from last season. Chul-Ak-Sorn is currently ranked No. 14 by GolfStat and No. 11 by Golfweek.
In 10 events this season, Chul-Ak-Sorn finished with six top-five finishes. She finished fifth at the Big 12 Championship, while she won the Mountain View Intercollegiate in record-setting fashion. Her 191 over 54-holes tied the NCAA record at 25-under par. Her 62 in the second round was the lowest score in Iowa State history and just the 12th round in NCAA women's golf history of 61 or 62.
The WGCA Freshman of the Year Presented by StrackaLine is awarded annually to the top Freshman in Division I, II, III and NAIA women's golf. Freshmen must have competed in a minimum of 12 competitive rounds to be considered. The recipient is selected by a prestigious collection of women's collegiate golf coaches who follow criteria that has been established to identify the top freshman for the past year. These criteria include adjusted scoring average, place finish in regular season events, head-to-head comparisons against the top 60 in the Golfstat Rankings, comparison of common opponents and strength of schedule.
Both Chul-Ak-Sorn and Woad are slated to compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup, scheduled for June 8-10 at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pa.
