SACRAMENTO, California – Iowa State cemented three more entries for NCAA Outdoor Championships while Janette Schraft became the first woman in ISU history to advance to nationals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to close NCAA West Prelims.
Emily March earned her way to NCAA Championships for the second-straight year in the discus as she finished fifth at West Prelims with 181-8 (55.37m). March hit the mark on her first of three throws to jump up the leaderboard out of flight three.
Schraft was the next Cyclone to qualify for nationals as the junior had a huge close in her heat, passing two runners in the final 800 meters to grab the last automatic qualifying spot. Schraft clocked 10:02.55 to redeem herself after finishing 14th last season to book her first-career trip to the Championships while becoming the first in ISU history to advance to nationals in the event.
The next qualifier of the day was Cailie Logue as she qualified in her second event for NCAA Championships with a blazing time of 15:36.50, finisihing third in her heat to automatically qualify. Logue ran with the lead pack throughout and broke away in the final 600 meters. The 13-time Big 12 Champ books her first-career trip in the outdoor 5K.
Makayla Clark ran 2:06.14 in 800m quarterfinals and just missed out on the final automatic qualifying slot of her heat, finalizing her dominant freshman season in the event with 15th place.
Zakiyah Amos broke her 400m hurdle PR for the fifth time this season to improve her time as the seventh-fastest Cyclone in the event with 57.50. The senior cemented 15th place in her remarkable first season competing in the event.
In 100m hurdles quarterfinals, Kaylyn Hall fell short of advancing as the senior closed her ISU career with an 18th-place finish of 13.30.
Iowa State ended the night with the school-record holding team making the Iowa State women's first appearance at West Prelims in the event since 2014. Three of the squad members qualified in individual events including two who competed today. Bria Barnes, Amos, Rachel Joseph and Clark combined for 3:35.32 out of heat one, but came two spots shy of claiming the last time-qualifying slot in 14th.
NCAA Championships are next for the Cyclones June 7-10.
