IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State throwers began action at the Hawkeye Invitational with two all-time program marks and an event title throughout the weight throw and shot put.
Cam Jones took down both the meet and facility weight throw record with his mark of 72-8 1/2 (22.16m) to win the event by over four feet. Jones, who set the school record while taking the Big 12 title in the event last season with 76-4 1/4, threw over 70 feet on each of his final four attempts. The mark currently ranks at No. 3 in NCAA DI action this season.
Daniel Norris made his ISU debut memorable with a third-place finish of 68-1 1/2 (20.76m), now the No. 4-ranking weight throw performance in Iowa State history.
Kaitlyn Burson wasted no time in her season opener, setting the second-best weight throw mark in Iowa State history on her very first throw. The senior's throw of 66-11 1/4 (20.40m) moves Burson from No. 4 to No. 2 in the program ranks while placing less than two inches behind first. Burson cleared 20 meters for the first time in her career and did so in four of six rounds. The mark currently ranks at No. 11 among NCAA DI throwers this season.
Ella O'Neall also put up a personal record in the event, placing eighth with 52-3 3/4 (15.94m).
In the men's shot put, Kevin Sakson opened his season leading the Cyclones with a fourth-place mark of 56-10 (17.32m) while Blake Veenstra took seventh with 53-7 (16.33m).
O'Neall (46-1 1/2, 14.06m) and Rosvold (45-4 1/4, 13.82m) wrapped up the day in the shot put finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
