Nine Cyclones Listed in Initial Coaches' Rankings for NCAA Championships

AMES, Iowa – The NCAA announced the first coaches' ranking for the 2024 NCAA Championships Monday. Nine Cyclones were included in the initial rankings, with six slotted inside the top 10 of their respective weight class.
David Carr and Yonger Bastida were Iowa State's highest ranked wrestlers, checking in at No. 2 at 165 and 285 pounds, respectively. Two Cyclone freshmen are ranked inside the top 10 in their weight classes: No. 5 Evan Frost (133) and No. 10 Cody Chittum (157).
Anthony Echemendia was tabbed No. 9 at 141 pounds while Clarion transfer and 2023 All-American Will Feldkamp is ranked No. 7 at 184 pounds.
The coaches' rankings are determined by a vote of 14 coaches in each weight class with two head coaches from each of the seven conferences.
For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. Wrestlers must have eight Division I matches in the weight class to be considered, including at least one match within the last 30 days.
ISU 149-pounder Casey Swiderski, who has been on the mend from a knee injury, is 8-2 against Division I competition this season but has not wrestled a match since Dec. 2, making him ineligible for the initial set of rankings. Swiderski has four wins against wrestlers ranked inside the top 15 at 149 pounds.
The coaches' ranking is one of several criteria that will be evaluated by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee during the at-large selection and seeding process along with head-to-head competition, quality wins, Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), conference tournament placement, results versus common opponents and win percentage.
