AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (9-10, 3-5 Big 12) dropped the hard-fought five setter to Kansas State (7-11, 5-4 Big 12) by set scores of 21-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-23, 20-22 Sunday. Iowa State forced a fifth and found match point six times, but K-State won the fight in an extended fifth 22-20.
In a wild fifth set, the frame saw nine total match points as the match went the distance. Maya Duckworth had clutch kills, hitting an errorless six on eight attempts in the frame alone, but K-State's Aliyah Carter was unstoppable hitting 10 to total a 30-kill match.
Lilly Wachholz led the Cyclones with 17 kills at an incredible .484 hitting percentage while putting up two blocks. Faith DeRonde also hit in double figures with 16, her third straight match with 10 or more.
Brooke Stonestreet had over 20 digs once again, recording her seventh match this season and 25th of her career with 20-plus as she totaled 29. Rachel Van Gorp also kept many rallies going as the freshman totaled 17 digs. Emily Bobbitt also totaled double-figure digs, while bringing in a double-double with 18 assists.
Amiree Hendricks-Walker tied for the match lead with seven blocks.
SET ONE
Both sides kept it even up to 5-5 before the Wildcats went out to take the next three. Wachholz stopped the run with her third kill on five swings, while Kiersten Schmitt laid down a kill next. Kansas State held onto the lead from there and took the set 25-21.
SET TWO
ISU took the advantage at 6-5 and remained up as Van Gorp kept the ball alive and Bobbitt snuck over the setter dump to make it 8-6. The Cyclones stretched it to six (15-8), but KSU came back to knot it at 21s on a 6-0 run. Iowa State went back up, reaching set point on a kill by DeRonde (24-22). A service error and a K-State block followed to again tie it at 24s. K-State recorded an attack error to bring it back to set point, and another DeRonde kill sealed the set 26-24 to tie up the match.
SET THREE
ISU responded with a 3-0 run of their own to make it 4-3, ISU, and the match saw another 5-5 tie to start. Pam McCune made her return in the set and put down a kill to knot it at 7s, and at 9-8 Iowa State battled to keep the ball alive while Stonestreet bumped it over for the kill to see another tie. The frame continued to see ties while KSU held the slight 15-14 edge at the media timeout. The scoring remained even up to 22s, but K-State reached set point causing an ISU timeout. Van Gorp fought it off once, but K-State would go up 2-1 in the match next by a set score of 25-23.
SET FOUR
It again was a tight set, meanwhile DeRonde capped a rally with her 11th kill to make the scoreboard read 9-9. The Cyclones would find a three-point lead at 13-10 on Wachholz 11th kill at .526 hitting, but K-State responded going up 15-14 at the media timeout. With KSU up 18-17, Iowa State battled through long rallies featuring clutch Van Gorp saves to lead 23-19 as Kansas State called a timeout. ISU went on to extend the match to a fifth 25-23 on a block by Hendricks-Walker and DeRonde.
SET FIVE
Iowa State went up 6-3, but K-State brought the match to another tie. ISU took the next two to hold the lead as the teams switched sides at 8-6. Duckworth kept ISU ahead with a kill to make it 9-8 and again K-State tied it up at 10s. KSU took the next to take its first lead, but the Cyclones flipped the advantage on a 3-0 to find match point at 14-12. KSU's Carter hit back-to-back kills to reach 28 on the match to keep it going. ISU reached match point twice more, while the Cyclones found it for a fourth time after a successful challenge to make it 17-16. ISU reached match point for the fifth and sixth time (18-17), but KSU followed with two more of their own (21-20). K-State took the next point to win the match after an ISU attack error.
