WACO, Texas – Iowa State (9-11, 3-6 Big 12) fell in dour at No. 17 Baylor (14-6, 6-3 Big 12). Iowa State took the third to keep the match going but ultimately dropped the match by set scores of 23-25, 18-25, 25-19, 16-25.
The Cyclones remained ahead deep in the first, but Baylor followed to flip the lead and hold it. Iowa State was outhit .312-.152 in the second, but battled to take the third and force a fourth. After an early 7-7 tie, Baylor took the lead for good to seal the victory.
Faith DeRonde led the match with 16 kills, achieving the total at an efficiency of .297. DeRonde also had eight digs and a block. Lilly Wachholz had the next highest total with nine kills, while also bringing in eight digs. Rachel Van Gorp hit eight kills without recording an error, tallying just one at the end of the match to record a hitting percentage of .389.
Brooke Stonestreet took control of the ninth-most digs in program history with 19 in the game to bring her career total to 1,341. Morgan Brandt also nears a career milestone as the setter now stands just four assists away from breaking into the program top 10.
SET ONE
Iowa State held the lead early, extending an 8-4 advantage before Baylor went on their way to knot the score. Wachholz then snuck her first kill inbounds and followed it with another to keep ISU in front. Iowa State went on a 3-0 run to reach the media timeout up 15-12 and would stay ahead 17-15 after Maya Duckworth and Amiree Hendricks-Walker put up a wall. BU went on to flip the lead and find an advantage of 21-18 deep in the set. Another Wachholz kill, an ace by Duckworth and a Baylor attack error brought it back to a tie to prompt a Baylor timeout. Wachholz fought off set point once with her sixth kill on 10 swings, but Baylor would win the opening frame on the next point 25-23.
SET TWO
DeRonde laid down her third kill to come within a pair of the Bears lead to make the scoreboard read 7-5, but Baylor controlled its lead. Iowa State came back within three (12-9) after a DeRonde kill and Tierney Jackson ace, while Baylor followed to find a 20-13 advantage as ISU service errors continued to hurt the Cyclones. Baylor went on to take the set 25-18.
SET THREE
The Cyclones put up back-to-back blocks aiding ISU to a 3-0 start, and after kills by Kiersten Schmitt and DeRonde the Cyclones led 5-2. Rachel Van Gorp became the eighth Cyclone to put down a kill as the Cyclones remained in front 10-8. Baylor got a lead at 12-11, but the set remained tight tied at 17s after an unsuccessful Iowa State challenge. Van Gorp followed with the kill and a block by Schmitt and McCune made it a two-point lead. That lead extended to five (23-18) after a 4-0 run and Iowa State pushed on to take the set 25-19.
SET FOUR
After a 7-7 tie, Baylor went on to lead 14-8 as ISU called a timeout. Van Gorp tallied her seventh kill, while Jackson served her third ace to tie her career high out of the break. The Bears held the momentum reaching 20 points as ISU held 15, and took the match by a fourth set score of 25-16.
