PROGRAM ON THE RISE
Head coach Kevin Dresser, in his eighth season at the helm, has brought Iowa State wrestling back into the national conversation. Iowa State finished in fourth place at the 2024 NCAA Championships with 68.5 team points, it's best finish and point total since 2010. ISU placed four wrestlers on the podium, its most since 2009.
Dresser inherited a program that scored one point and finished tied for 57th at the 2017 NCAA Championships. Since then, Iowa State has finished T-45th, 16th, T-13th, 17th, 11th and 4th at the NCAA Championships.Â
Iowa State lost only two duals last season, against No. 4 Iowa and No. 5 Oklahoma State, but finished ahead of both at the NCAA Championships.
BASTIDA LOOKS TO BOUNCE BACK
Heavyweight Yonger Bastida is expected back in the lineup Saturday against the Hawkeyes after missing the first two duals due to injury. He looks to bounce back after a disappointing end to a dominant 2023-24 season.Â
Bastida was the lone Cyclone to enter the NCAA Championships with an undefeated record, but fell short of the podium following a last-second quarterfinal defeat to Michigan's Lucas Davison and subsequent blood round defeat later on Friday evening - his only two losses of the year.
Bastida's season was still noteworthy, however. He had 102 takedowns to his name and only allowed six, three of which occurred at the national tournament. He finished with a 26-2 record which included 18 bonus point victories (3 WBF, 9 TF, 6 MD).
The Cuban will be tested in his first match of the season against an athletic Hawkeye and dual-sport athlete, No. 13 Ben Kueter.
JOHNSON RETURNS
After missing the 2023-24 season, Paniro Johnson made his return to action at the Grand View Open last weekend. Johnson went 3-1 with the lone loss being a medical forfeit out of the tournament.
The Pennsylvania native is listed in the projected lineup at 157 pounds for Saturday's match against the Hawkeyes. His opponent would be No. 1 Jacori Teemer, who was an NCAA finalist last year.
Johnson, a 2023 Big 12 Champion, was one of the best storylines at 149 pounds in 2022-23. He put the college wrestling world on notice with several big wins early in his freshman season, including a win in Carver-Hawkeye Arena over No. 6 Max Murin.
Johnson was the No. 5 seed at the 2023 NCAA Championships but was eliminated from the tournament after scoring just one team point. He finished the year with an 18-6 record.
