AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-6, 0-3 Big 12) lost a tight matchup against the Kansas Jayhawks (6-3, 1-0 Big 12) to end the 2023-24 regular season. Iowa State had multiple individual victories on the day but Kansas was able to secure a 184.5 to 128.5 victory in Ames.Â
"It was an up and down meet in some ways where both teams were strong in areas the other was not and it set us up well for what the Big 12 Championships will be like." head coach Duane Sorenson said.Â
Andie Quirke started the day for the Cyclones off strong with a first-place finish in the 50 free at a final time of 52.06.
Fallon DeWitt kept the momentum up for the Cyclones, winning the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.42. Emma Kuhn followed DeWitt in third place with a finishing time of 2:05.92.Â
Kuhn continued her strong season with a victory in the 200 IM at a time of 2:08.10. DeWitt (2:08.28) would follow behind the freshman with a second-place finish.
In 3-meter diving, Kate Mitchell set a personal best for the third meet in a row. Mitchell's score of 312.23 puts her at the No. eight spot in the all-time top performers list in the event.Â
The Cyclones had two dominant performances in the 500 free from Brinley Horras and Corinne Guist. Horras took first place with a 5:01.62 time with Guist following right behind her in second at a time of 5:02.63.Â
Horras' win in the event gives her sole possession of the No. 16 spot in the all-time points leaderboard.Â
"It was a great day to see some of our seniors like Brinley win their events in our final home meet." Sorenson said.Â
The dual meet ended with the 400 free relay where the Cyclones took second place with a final time of 3:28.87.Â
ON DECK - Big 12 ChampionshipsÂ
The Cyclones will travel to Morgantown, W. Va. to participate in the 2024 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships from Feb. 27-March 2 at the Mylan Aquatic Center.Â
