FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – Iowa State track and field had a fast day, racing to eight top 10 program performances including two sub-4 miles. Throughout the weekend, ISU totaled 11 top 10-ranked performances at the Tyson Invite, Husky Classic and Valentine Invite.
Rachel Joseph continued her elite weekend, sprinting to the second-fastest ISU performance with a 200m indoor personal record of 24.01, the day after resetting her 400m school record.
Said Mechaal, who downed the mile school record last week, jumped up to third in ISU history in the 5,000m with his run of 13:27.43 at the Valentine Invite. Mechaal finished 18th overall and as the fourth-fastest collegian. The field included current Cyclone pros Wesley Kiptoo and Ryan Ford.
Maelle Porcher ran right to the third-fastest mile time in school history as the sophomore finished 10th at the Husky Invite with 4:37.36. The first-year Cyclone trimmed over five seconds off her previous best.
Makayla Clark then posted an all-time 800m personal record, racing to 2:05.15 to top her indoor best of 2:05.79 set two weeks ago and her personal record of 2:05.56. The sophomore cemented seventh at the Tyson Invite, while making the move from No. 5 to No. 4 on the ISU indoor performance list.
Next came the men's 800m, where Finley Mclear again went out to an Iowa State personal best, lowering it to 1:46.97 to finish second in the invitational heat. Mclear improved his time at No. 5 in Iowa State history and currently ranks ninth in the nation.
Silas Winders then became the ninth in program history to break four minutes in the mile, winning the event at the Tyson Invite with 3:59.88. Winders also ranks ninth in program history. An hour later at the Valentine Invite, Ezekiel Rop became the 10th to go sub-4, clocking 3:59.94. Three Cyclones have now broken the four-minute barrier this season.
The Cyclones continued putting up ranked Iowa State performances, with Gus Langford cementing the next in the men's 200m. The sophomore clocked an indoor best of 21.67 to tie the ninth-best performance. Mikey McClain posted the fastest Cyclone time in the event with 21.57.
At the Valentine Invite, Emanuel Galdino finished third overall and as the fastest collegian in the 1,000m with a season best of 2:22.18, less than a second off his PR that ranks eighth in program history.
Gable Sieperda came close to his 3,000m best time with 7:55.14, less than two seconds off his No. 8 ISU-ranking PR. Rodgers Rotich carved nearly 15 seconds off his previous best, clocking 7:56.35.
The final week of indoor regular season is next week, with the Iowa Open and Arkansas Qualifier Feb. 16.
