MIAMI, Florida – Iowa State totaled eight top-10 ranked program performances in day two to wrap up the Hurricane Invite, led by Darius Kipyego running 1:45 in the 800-meter.
Kipyego began his outdoor season dominantly going sub-1:46 for the first time. The First Team All-American timed in at 1:45.76 for the victory and move from No. 8 to No. 4 on Iowa State's elite performance list. The time ties the No. 2 time in the nation. Kipyego topped his previous outdoor best of 1:47.22 set in 2023 and trimmed his all-time best set this indoor season by nearly a second. Tyler Carreon also clocked an all-time best of 1:48.83 for fifth.
Rachel Joseph followed that race up with a wind-legal 23.80 in the 200m. The time tops her previous best of 23.99 to move up a spot to No. 3 in ISU history. The sophomore was the second-fastest collegian finishing eighth overall in the event.
Day two of the heptathlon began with Kiersten Fisher finishing fourth in the long jump with 19-0 (5.79m) and Kailynn Gubbels hitting a personal best of 18-3 (5.56m). The javelin came next with Gubbels placing fourth with a throw of 117-9 (35.89m). In the final event, the 800m, Gubbels set an outdoor-best 2:23.95 and Fisher timed in at 2:25.95.
Overall, both Cyclones broke over 5,000 points and set personal bests to improve their standings on the program list. Gubbels totaled 5,236, a nearly 300-point improvement from last season, to move up to No. 5 in ISU history and Fisher totaled 5,058 to tie the seventh-best performance. Gubbels finished fourth and Fisher 10th.
The 100m dash saw top-10 program performances for both the women and men. Freshman Brooklyn Sandvig made her first race as a Cyclone memorable setting the seventh-fastest performance of 11.76, finishing eighth overall and as the third-fastest collegian. Mikey McClain hit a collegiate PR of 10.48 with a wind reading of 1.9 m/s, just under the wind-legal threshold of 2.0. The time ties the ninth-best performance in school history as McClain finished 13th overall and as the fifth-fastest collegian.
McClain then raced in the 200m an hour later, clocking another wind legal time with 20.94 to debut at No. 7 in Iowa State history. McClain was the second-fastest collegiate finisher.
Makayla Clark raced next for the Cyclones, going out to an outdoor-best 2:04.70 in the 800m to lock down the victory. The finish moves the sophomore up from ranking ninth in ISU history to No. 7. Kaia Holtkamp handed in a big PR of 2:12.92.
In 110m hurdles, Jack Latham finished as the third-fastest collegian and fifth overall with a wind-legal 14.22 and freshman Grayson Hartman clocked 14.60 for ninth. Both hit personal bests.
The women's 4x400m closed the meet with the victory as the squad of Bria Barnes, Brooklyn Sandvig, Camryn Hubbard and Makayla Clark combined for 3:40.65, just off the all-time top 10 list. The men's squad cemented third.
Next up the Cyclones split up for the Bryan Clay Invite in Azusa Pacific, California and the Jim Duncan Invite in Des Moines April 12-13.
