EUGENE, Oregon – Sanele Masondo earned First Team All-America to highlight day one of NCAA Championships. Iowa State also notched three national final slots on the day while three others garnered All-America honors.
Masondo ended day one with a bang earning First Team All-America honors in the 10,000m and scoring two points for Iowa State finishing seventh in 28:13.29. The time is a personal record and the fourth-fastest performance in school history. Masondo sat in 13th through 5,000 meters and with 2,000 meters to go, the junior moved up four spots and continued to make his way up despite the lead pack being tripped up with two to go. In the final lap, Masondo blazed up to seventh. Masondo entered with the 37th-fastest time in the NCAA.
Masondo is the seventh man in Iowa State 10K history to earn First Team honors, and the first since 2010. He is also the 10th individual and totals the 13th All-America honor in the event.
Ezekiel Rop was the first to punch a ticket to finals as he qualified on time with a 1,500m season-best 3:37.62. Rop finished sixth both in his heat and overall to make a trip to the national final for the second year in a row.
Racing alongside Rop in heat two was Peter Smith who blazed to a personal record of 3:39.23, cutting over a second off his PR set at regionals. The time is now the fourth-fastest in school history. The second heat was a fast one as 11 of the top 12 times were posted in Smith and Rop's heat, while Smith finished 10th overall just missing out on a time qualifier. Smith earns Second Team All-America honors to close his Iowa State career strong, becoming the eighth All-American in the event in ISU history.
With the fastest five from each heat automatically moving onto the steeplechase final, Gable Sieperda stood in sixth out of the last water jump. The senior then took it to another level with a big kick to finish fourth and grab an auto-qualifying slot. Sieperda clocked a dominant 8:32.96 to make his first-career trip to a national final.
Finley Mclear then automatically qualified for the 800m final, taking second in the first heat with 1:47.29. Mclear will race in his fourth NCAA Championships 800m final and second competing for Iowa State.
Darius Kipyego also raced in the first heat, finishing fourth with 1:47.56. Kipyego just missed out on a time qualifier as he clocked the ninth-fastest time in semifinals, picking up Secon Team All-America honors. Kipyego ends a strong junior season with two All-America honors, a new 800m personal record of 1:45.76 and the 1,000m school record. Kipyego is the 17th man in ISU history to earn All-America honors in the outdoor 800m, totaling the 27th total honor.
Cam Jones finished 10th in the shot put for Second Team All-America, missing out on moving on to the final three rounds by one spot. The junior hit the mark of 63-4 (19.30m) on his first attempt to sit in ninth through two rounds and was just bumped out of advancement in the third. Jones picks up his third All-America honor of the season and records his highest finish at NCAA Championships.
Jones is the seventh man in school history to earn outdoor shot put All-America honors and first since 2015. It is the 10th total honor in the event.
