EUGENE, Oregon – Cyclones made their mark at U.S. Olympic trials while other Iowa State athletes competed around the globe representing their countries.
Rachel Joseph made her presence known advancing to semifinals and coming one spot short of making the nine-person final. The sophomore started out in the final of five first round heats, amazing the crowd going sub-51 for the first time to win with 50.92. As Joseph broke the school record for the fourth time, the time also hit the Olympic standard (50.95) and was the fourth-fastest in the round of 33.
In the 400m semifinals just over 24 hours later, Joseph continued to impress once again hitting a PR, not a small feat in the short turn around. The Texas native in the third and final semifinal round clocked 50.74, once again under the Olympic standard and breaking the program record for the fifth time this season. With the top two in each heat plus the next three fastest times, Joseph finished second in her heat and 10th overall, one off advancement.
The standout sprinter ends her season ranked No. 32 in the world and No. 14 in the U.S. Joseph holds the indoor and outdoor 400m and outdoor 200m school record and cut 1.62 seconds off her 2023 outdoor 400m PR (52.36) - a major time cut in the event.
In the first rounds of the women's 800m, fellow sophomore Makayla Clark grabbed one of the three time qualifiers with an elite 2:02.34, finishing seventh in her heat and 22nd overall to move on. In semifinals, Clark finished 26th overall with 2:05.81. The sophomore put together an incredible season moving up to rank No. 2 in school history with 2:01.72 as she continually cut off time from her 2023 outdoor best of 2:05.56.
Cyclone pro Hillary Bor advanced comfortably to the men's steeplechase final with 8:22.99, while Cyclone senior Gable Sieperda came just short of the final advancing spot finishing 15th in 8:28.80. In the final with Bor leading the pack with less than 1,000 meters to go, the steeplechaser fell in the water jump and was unable to make up ground to advance to Paris.

Cyclone pro Ryan Ford competed in the 10,000m final and worked his way up to as far as fourth place with less than 2,000 meters to run. Ford finalized ninth in 28:08.72.
