Ken Sheppard, an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Texas for nine seasons, was named head strength and conditioning coach for Gene Chizik’s football program in January 2007. His impact was immediate as Iowa State’s football players were bigger, faster and stronger last season. The list of current NFL players who have grown faster, stronger and more explosive under Sheppard’s guidance is a long one. Among his pupils as collegians were Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young, Chicago Bears defensive back Nathan Vasher, Tennessee Titan tight end Alge Crumpler and Detroit Lions wide receiver Roy Williams.
While at Texas, he supervised Longhorn daily strength facility activities and implemented training programs for individual student-athletes. He also supervised nutrition plans for Texas athletes. With the Longhorn football program, Sheppard directed the Mack Brown/Jeff Madden Texas Speed and Explosive Power Camp, one of the largest camps of its kind in the United States. The 1985 graduate of North Carolina Central (criminal justice) was the camp’s primary administrator and developed curriculum for beginning strength coaches.
Sheppard also served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at North Carolina for five seasons. At UNC, he designed and implemented strength and conditioning plans in an athletics program that boasted 29 sports. He worked with former Iowa State assistant coach and current Texas head coach Mack Brown at North Carolina and Texas. The Longhorns were in a bowl game in every year of Sheppard’s service and earned the collegiate football national championship in 2005.
He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the National Football Coaches Association, the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association and the National Association of Speed and Explosion.
