FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Iowa State senior Gina Curtis-Rickert finished third in the high jump today at the NCAA Track and Field Indoor Championship clearing 6-1 and getting narrowly edged out of a second-place finish by a single miss.
Curtis-Rickert held an NCAA-best qualifying mark of 6-3 1/2 going in to the NCAA Championship. The Brooklyn Park, Minn., native wrapped up her final indoor season as ISU's all-time high jump leader with the mark.
"I thought I had a really good chance (to take first) going into today's meet, but the first and second-place jumpers had their best meets of the season," Curtis-Rickert said. "That is what it takes to win a national championship."
Nevena Lendel of SMU claimed first place with a leap of 6-2 1/4. Kent State's Alexandra Church took second place with a jump of 6-1 and only one miss while Curtis-Rickert tallied two misses.
"She took 14 jumps today and competed very hard," head coach Dick Lee said. "When you take that many jumps in a competition, you have to be working at it. She did a great job and we still have the outdoor season to look forward to."
Susan Sherman, Iowa State's only other NCAA qualifier, will compete in the weight throw on Sat., March 15 at 2 p.m. in Fayetteville, Ark.
Curtis-Rickert will resume action as the Cyclones begin the outdoor season at the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, S.C., on April 5.
