AMES, Iowa - Senior Brita Benson took top honors in the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.34, but Iowa State was eventually defeated by intrastate rival Iowa 214-85 on Saturday in Iowa City.
"I was very proud of the effort of our women today," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "Unfortunately, we came up short in almost every race. Kim Rogers had a very good 200 backstroke race today and Brita had a great 50 freestyle race. I thought Lauren Breunig had the most consistent meet of anyone on the team."
Rogers' time of 2:06.76 in the 200 backstroke landed her in third while fellow junior Maggie Peterson finished fourth (2:09.74). Benson followed up her victorious 50 freestyle performance with a solid second-place showing in the 100 butterfly (59.20).
Sophomore Lauren Breunig finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:53.13) and 200 individual medley (2:08.89), third in the 100 freestyle (52.98) and anchored the third-place 400 freestyle relay (3:35.27).
In the 1000 freestyle, junior Lydia Smirniotis was the runner-up (10:31.78) while sophomore Chelsey Walden took third (10:44.92).
The 200 medley relay of Rogers, Krista Fehl, Benson and Jenny Lindberg finished second with a mark of 1:47.92.
In diving, junior Hillary Nichols placed third on the 1-meter springboard with 238.50 points while senior Gail Olson finished fourth with 234.90. The two traded places on the 3-meter springboard with Olson finishing third (255.38) and Nichols in fourth (242.48).
