AMES, Iowa - Coming off a convincing win against SDSU on Friday night, the Cyclones put together an equally impressive victory over the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha, 274-188. The swimming dual was a unique meet in which the number of events was reduced, but many of the girls still competed in up to six events.

“I was really proud of the way our girls competed today,” said head coach Duane Sorenson. “Many of the girls were asked to race in six or so races and they all did a tremendous job and got stronger and stronger as the meet progressed.”

Leading the way for the Cyclones were Lauren Breunig and Tien Tran.

Breunig, a senior from Mazomanie, Wis., competed in six events on the day with first-place finishes in the 200 free (1:54.93), the 100 free (53.23) and the 50 free (24.84). She was also the anchor leg for the winning 400 Medley Relay team (4:04.65). Breunig earned second place in the 500 free (5:13.89) and was part of the second-place 200 medley relay (1:54.62).

Taking the crown in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events on the boards was Tien Tran. The freshman from Greenwood, Ind. improved upon her score from the previous night of 245.48, to earn a first-place finish in the 1-meter (256.80). She followed that up with another solid performance in the 3-meter with a score of 272.56.

“Tien is doing an outstanding job this year,” head diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “She is very talented, consistent and we expect her to keep building and to have a great season. I'm very proud of the way both she and Haley (Haynes) performed today. This was a challenging weekend with the late night last night and the early morning today and I feel our girls handled it very well.”

The Cyclones will take a week off before heading to Macomb, Ill. to challenge Western Illinois and Illinois State on Friday, October 3. Iowa State will return to action at Beyer Hall on Dec. 2 when intrastate rival Northern Iowa makes the trip to Ames.
