Haynes, a native of The Woodlands, Texas, finished third in the event while teammate Tran finished in fifth, a day after she placed tenth in the 3-meter diving event.
“I was very pleased with the team's overall performance today,” said head diving coach Jeff Warrick. “I was very happy with the improvements that both Haley and Tien made in the finals. They both really stepped up and did a fantastic job.”
Alongside Haynes and Tran, sophomore Kali Fryklund finished in 19th place but was less than eight points away from making the finals. Fryklund placed 11th in the 3-meter board in yesterday's competition.
Haynes' and Tran's top six scores also qualified them to participate in tonight's special event called the Bulldog Shootout. In this event, there were five rounds with each diver taking one dive per round. The diver with the lowest score of each round is ultimately eliminated until there are only two divers left in the fifth and final round.
In the shootout, Tran made it past the first round, performing an inward 1 1/2 somersault (ss) pike, but was eliminated after performing her front 2 1/2 ss tuck in the second round. Haynes advanced to the final round and did her dives in the following order: inward 1 1/2 ss pike, front 2 1/2 ss tuck, back 1 1/2 ss 1 1/2 twists, reverse 1 1/2 ss pike, back 1 1/2 ss pike. Haynes' last dive was very good, scoring over 40 points, but it was not enough to beat
The Georgia Diving Invitational will come to an end tomorrow with the conclusion of the platform diving event. Both Tran and Fryklund will be competing for
