Cyclones Place Sixth at Big 12 Relays

AMES, Iowa ? Jeli Nixt and Jenny Vondenkamp led the way for Iowa State as the Cyclones placed sixth at the Big 12 Relays. The Cyclones finished with 31.5 team points, just three points behind fifth place Nebraska.

Heading into the final event, Iowa State was tied for fifth with the Cornhuskers but failed to capitalize in the 100 yard freestyle 4x25 relay. The Cyclones came in fifth with a time of 45.48, just .42 seconds behind Nebraska, who finished second. The Cyclones were also disqualified in the 150 butterfly relay earlier on in the meet, which proved costly in the end.

Nixt, a freshman from Portland, Ore., recorded a lifetime best anchoring the fifth place 800 yard medley 200-400-200 IM relay team. Nixt was also a member of the 150 breast 3x50 relay team which placed second, Iowa State's highest finish on the day. She also competed in four other events, earning three fifth-place finishes and a sixth.

Nixt's fellow freshman Vondenkamp of Elk River, Minn., had a season best in her split in the 1500 yard freestyle 3x500 relay. She also had a lifetime best anchoring the fifth place 400 medley 4x100 relay team.

“This was a great opportunity for us to see some of our swimmers in different races that they aren't necessarily used to,” said head coach Duane Sorenson. “It allows us to experiment with some of the athletes and possibly find out that they may do better in an event than we expected them to.”

On the boards, Tien Tran picked up right where she left off last year with solid performances on both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Tran finished fourth in each event scoring 221.45 on the 1-meter and 229.50 on the 3-meter.

Iowa State will return to action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., as they host Texas A&M and Missouri at Beyer Hall.
