Iowa State senior volleyball player Erin Boeve finished off her Iowa State career on Friday evening as the Cyclones fell to No. 6 California in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament. Boeve finishes her career with 1,334 kills, good for third all-time at Iowa State, and 590 total blocks. She holds the school-record for career block assists with 503. Hello one last time to all my fellow blog readers! The Cyclones' volleyball season is officially over, which is full of mixed emotions. We are definitely disappointed we were eliminated from the NCAA tournament but we were happy to get as far as we did!
Let me fill you in on the week. On Monday, we started off with a lighter practice that consisted of a little defense along with serving and passing. It was nice not to jump and swing as much since our bodies were still pretty tired from the matches the weekend before. On Tuesday, we were back in the gym with a full practice preparing for California, who we were scheduled to play on Friday evening. Wednesday marked our last day of practice in Ames, before we headed back to Madison, Wis., for another round in the NCAA tournament. Before we got back on the bus to take off for Madison, we stopped by the women's basketball game in Hilton against Iowa for an awesome send-off! During the first time-out, we all went on the court and received a standing ovation for our accomplishments. We would have loved to stay for the rest of the game, but we had to get on the road so we didn't get to Madison too late!
On Thursday, we had an hour and a half practice in the late morning. After that we grabbed a bit to eat at Noodles, the same place we ate last week. On Thursday afternoon, we had a quick press conference then it was back to the hotel for the remaining part of the day! Many of us worked on homework and studied for upcoming finals next week, but I was also able to fit a nap in there too! I love my naps! On Thursday night, we went out to eat at Nitty Gritty's. We were joined by Iowa State alumni that now live in Madison. It was great to see their continued Cyclone spirit!
Friday finally rolled around, which meant it was game day! We had an hour practice in the morning and pre-game meal right at the hotel in the early afternoon. Our match started at 5 p.m., with an outcome we really didn't want. We lost the match in three relatively close games (30-27, 30-27, 30-24). We fought hard the whole match but just weren't able to contain their two very talented outside hitters in the end. They were a very good team. They went on to beat Nebraska on Saturday night in three games. That right there should tell you how good of a team they are.
Iowa State's volleyball program has made great progress just in the past few years. Coming in as a freshmen I never would have thought we would have even made it into the NCAA tournament in my career, let alone make it to the final 16 teams! It was the first time in school history that the volleyball team has made it this far. This past week also marked the first time that Iowa State has received a national ranking of No. 18! To be a part of school history is pretty remarkable and definitely unforgettable.
I have had a great experience playing for the Iowa State Cyclones! I just can't believe my career is complete, it went so fast. I just want to thank everyone for all the support you have given us through the years. We couldn't have done it without our families, friends, fans and definitely our coaches. It has truly been an awesome experience that I will never forget!
Happy Holidays!
Go Cyclones!
