Tran Places Ninth on Platform Event

AUSTIN, Texas ? On the final day of the 2007 Zone D Diving Championships, Tien Tran represented Iowa State with a top-ten finish in the platform diving event.

Tran, a freshman from Greenwood, Ind., posted a score of 356.15 on her way to her second ninth-place finish of the weekend. After prelims, Tran found herself in last place, but an extremely impressive performance in the finals led to a ninth-place finish.

"I thought Tien did a fantastic job in the finals," said head diving coach Jeff Warrick. "She did a really good job bouncing back mentally. I could see a change in her attitude after prelims and it really showed up in her performance in finals."

In the 3-meter event on Friday, Tran finished 11^th with a score of 506.15 and followed that performance up with a ninth-place score of 482.05 in the 1-meter board on Saturday.

With the conclusion of this meet, Tran ends her sensational freshman season with nine victories and 19 top-three finishes. Tran also captured first place in the first six individual events that she competed in as a Cyclone. Tran put herself in the Iowa State record book with her 3-meter dive (288.37) against South Dakota State which was the tenth-best dive in school history.

"Tien has had an outstanding performance at the Zone Diving Championships," added Warrick. "This will definitely help her in the future. It shows her that she can compete and if she can fix some minor things she will do really well in the future."

Next on the schedule for Iowa State is the NCAA Championship in Minneapolis, Minn., on March 8-10. Competing for the Cyclones is senior Lauren Breunig who will be swimming in the 100 free, 200 free and 200 IM. Results will be available on cyclones.com.
