Alumni Meet (Coed Meet)

10.01.2010 | Swimming and Diving
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team welcomed back Cyclones from the past, hosting an Alumni Meet Friday night at Beyer Pool. The night consisted of eight swimming events and 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions before the alumni and current student-athletes met up for a post-meet social.
“It was a fabulous night," Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. "Our women had a great time competing against the alumni. The events were very alumni-friendly as we allowed them to swim 4x25 or 2x50 and a lot of them took advantage of that. It was also exciting having our men's swimmers and divers back. We had a Masters swimmer, Mick Berry, swim his best time ever in the 100 fly.”
The alumni put up a strong showing in the pool, with the veterans taking five of the eight swimming events. Lindsey Behrens collected two wins for the Alumni while the men's swimming team of Dennis Bennet, Eric Furcht, Mike Hemenway and Abe Quiring collected wins in the 100 medley and 200 free relays.
“The alumni came here with the perspective that we were going to have fun,” Frances Calzada, who teamed with Behrens to win the 100 free, said. “We were excited to swim with people we haven't swum with since our freshman and sophomore years and we enjoyed everything that we were doing.”
The current Cyclones were led by Sarah Norris, who contributed in all three current Cyclone victories in the 200 medley and 100 free relays along with a win in the 100 back.
Among the other past Cyclones competing and in attendance were two-time All-American Annette Ackerson-Waldorf and former school record holders Abby Glaser and Marni Benson.
The diving well was kept busy as 2010 NCAA Championships qualifier Tien Tran put up a strong showing in both three-dive events. Tran was joined by three-time Big Eight champion Janet Lahti-Schultze and former men's team diver Michael Amberson. The diving judging panel was a collection of Cyclone greats including former diving coach Jerry Symons and All-American Lee-Jay Strifer. Jeff Symons judged 1-meter and had Steve Spikes take over for him on 3-meter. Spikes will be inducted into the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame next weekend.
Iowa State will be back in action next Friday Oct. 8 when they host their annual intrasquad meet. The meet kicks off at 6 p.m. at Beyer Pool and admission is free.
