Iowa State

Challenge at Onion Creek

11.02.2010 | Women's Golf
AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 26 Iowa State women's golf team capped off a phenomenal fall season by winning the Challenge at Onion Creek Tuesday afternoon in Austin, Texas. The Cyclones shot a final-round 309 for an 884 54-hole total, outlasting second-place Arkansas-Little Rock by three shots (887).
It was the first tournament title for head coach Christie Martens and the first by a Cyclone team since winning the 2004 Lady Razorback Invitational. Iowa State's 884 team total ties for the fourth-best score in school history.
"It was really exciting for us to get this victory," Martens said. "Our team stayed tough at the end. It was really windy this afternoon and they really grinded out. We have a team that really likes to be around each other and pulls for each other. It was great to see all six golfers play well in the tournament."
The Cyclones received top-10 performances from senior Victoria Stefansen (T4th- 216) and freshman Prima Thammaraks (10th- 220). Stefansen, who recorded her 10th top-10 placing of her career, shot rounds of 73-73-70 en route to a career-low 216. Thammaraks notched her second career top-10 in just four starts with rounds of 74-71-75.
Sophomore Punpaka Phuntumabamrung also had a solid showing for the Cyclones, tying for 11th at 221 (70-73-78).
Denver's Tonje Daffinrud and UALR's Megan Vaughn tied for medalist honors at 214.
The tournament concludes Iowa State's fall campaign. The Cyclones have a great shot at reaching the top-25 with their impressive showing this afternoon. Iowa State never finished worse than fourth place in the five fall meets.
