EVANSTON, Ill. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team picked up three event victories Sunday at the TYR Northwestern Invitational. The Cyclones finished second in the team standings with 803 points. Hosts Northwestern won the team title with 1,495 points.
“Every session we seemed to get stronger and better,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. “It shows that our hard training is really paying off and it paid off. I am pleased with our performances throughout the day and the meet.”
Dani Harris picked up her second win in as many days as she took the 200 back title in 1:59.81. Harris was second after prelims, going 2:02.71 in the morning session and was the only 200 back competitor to break the two minute barrier. Harris also collected a fifth place finish in the 200 breast.
“That was less than three-tenths off her lifetime best,” Sorenson noted. “She swam great throughout the whole weekend.”
Sarah Norris dominated the prelim session of the 50 back, holding the top qualifying time with a 26.67 in the morning session. The pressure and competition heated up in the evening but Norris was able to hold off Northwestern's Liza Engstrom to win the 50 back final in 26.72. Norris also captured an eighth place finish in the 50 fly on the day.
“This was Sarah's first major win and she was determined to take care of business,” Sorenson said. “She had a tougher time in the finals but she took care of business and got the win.”
Jenny Vondenkamp and Meredith Doran both turned in top eight finishes in the mile with Vondenkamp sixth (17:26.61) and Doran eighth (17:34.16). Elena Carvell put up her top performance of the weekend with a third place finish in the 50 fly (25.66). Vondenkamp and Chelsea Tomek joined Harris in the 200 back final and finished sixth (2:07.24) and seventh (2:08.82), respectively.
Emily Wiltsie and Marley Suckow both joined Harris in the 200 breast final. Wiltsie took sixth (2:20.98) and Suckow seventh (2:23.28). Megan Thompson and Carvell also were in the 'A' final of the 50 back with Norris. Thompson took a tie for fourth (27.74) and Carvell took eighth (28.25). In the final event of the meet, the 400 free relay, the team of Harris, Katie Vollhaber, Kalyn Amundsen and Carvell took sixth place in 3:33.18.
Sarah Nelson picked up Iowa State's first diving victory of the TYR Invitational, running away with the platform diving title with a score of 245.90. The score is the third-highest in school history and a career best for the junior by over 40 points.
“That was her best performance on platform,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “She went over 40 points better than her previous best, which is almost like adding another dive to her list. She did a fantastic job on the day. Hopefully she can carry that to the springboard events.”
Finishing spots six through 10 were all occupied by Cyclones. Jessica Nicholson finished sixth in her first platform diving competition of her Iowa State career with a score of 186.90. Following her were Lauren Naeve (seventh, 183.25), Jenn Botsch (eighth, 179.70), Justine Anders (ninth, 178.95) and Abby Christensen (10th, 178.95).
“It was pretty exciting to see everybody do so well,” Warrick noted. “Some of the others continue to get better. Justine Anders had her best score ever on platform and it was a real soild effort overall. Jessica had her best score in her first ever effort on the board.”
The Cyclones will be in action again on Dec. 10 when they travel to Iowa City to face Iowa in their annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series meeting. The meet will begin at 6 p.m.
