COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? With her place already set in stone for the NCAA Championships next weekend, Tien Tran finished off an already successful weekend with a seventh-place finish on platform with a 10-dive score of 472.45 Sunday at the NCAA Zone ?D' Diving Championships.
Tran was in fourth place after prelims with a five-dive score of 246.55. That score was helped in great part by a 60.45 point inward 2 ? somersault tuck on her second dive. Tran finished off her prelims with a 50.00 point dive to push herself into the top-four.
In the finals, Tran posted a 50.70 forward 2 ? somersault pike to begin her finals. Tran ended up posting a five-dive total in the finals of 225.90.
“In prelims she did really well,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “I was really happy with how she was ready to start the day and to finish in fourth in prelims is pretty good. In the finals I think there were a few factors. There was the fatigue factor, this is a tough meet and with it being the third day, it is hard to keep performing at a high level. She also missed her finishes on several dives. It was an overall good meet for her though.”
Abby Christensen wrapped up her zone diving meet and season with a 20th-place showing with a score of 177.45. Christensen used 40 plus point dives on her first and last dives to reach that score.
“We were hoping for her to be around that 200 point mark,” Warrick said. “Based on what I saw today she could have been there, but she missed some finishes and when you do that you are not going to get the scores you want.”
Warrick also hopes that Christensen will use her experience at the meet to help build into next season.
“I think she is going to do a great job for us next year,” Warrick said. “She had a great experience and she saw she can compete. For her first time going to the zone meet she did a really nice job.”
Tran and swimmer Nan Liu will compete at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships next weekend at West Lafayette, Ind. on the campus of Purdue University. Swimming prelims start at 10 a.m. all three days and diving prelims will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. all three days.
