Iowa State Places Second At Tough Lady Puerto Rico Field

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - The No. 26-ranked Iowa State women's golf team showed no signs of rust after the winter lay-off, finishing second at the star-studded Lady Puerto Rico Classic Tuesday afternoon.
The Cyclones, which carded their second-best 54-hole score of all-time at 880, made a final-round surge to briefly overtake No. 1-ranked Alabama in the team race. The top-ranked Crimson Tide eventually repeated as team champion at 875, but not before the Cyclones made it a tight finish with a final-round-low 287.
The tournament featured eight teams ranked in the top-30 according to Golfstat, including defending national champion and sixth-ranked Purdue, which placed fourth, 16 strokes behind the Cyclones.
"We really played well and this exciting for our program," Iowa State head coach Christie Martens said. "We were right there with the best team in the nation (Alabama) and it shows we can go out there and compete with anybody."
Cyclones Punpaka Phuntumabamrung and Laurence Herman each carded 71s this afternoon, followed by a 72 from freshman Prima Thammaraks to help put pressure on Alabama. Freshman Sasikarn On-iam was the Cyclones' top finisher, tying for fourth with consistent rounds of 72-73-73 (218). It was On-iam's first top-10 effort of her career.
Senior Victoria Stefansen notched her 11th top-10 finish of her career by tying for ninth at 222 (79-69-74). In all, all five Cyclones competing for the team title placed in the top-20.
Iowa State is back in action Feb. 21-22, at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla.
