CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Redshirt sophomore Michael Moreno continued his winning ways Saturday, as he took home the title at 165 pounds at the UNI Open today. The Urbandale, Iowa native picked up a huge win as he defeated No. 5 Conrad Polz of Illinois 6-5 in the championship match.
"I thought everyone as a whole wrestled well today," head coach Kevin Jackson said. "Everyone that competed today got better."
Moreno began the day with a bye in the first round. He then defeated Wade Groin of Upper Iowa 10-4 and Riley Banch of Northern Iowa by way of a 4-2 decsion. In the semifinals at 165 pounds, Moreno beat Jarret Jensen of Northern Iowa 8-2 to advance to the championship match. In the championship match, Moreno was victorious scoring a 3-1 decision over No. 5 Conrad Polz of Illinois. Moreno now leads the team in wins, as his season record moves to 10-1 on the year.
Three more Cyclones had notable finishes and placed in the top five today.
No. 17 Kyven Gadson was the runner-up at 197 pounds, as he was forced to medical forfeit in the championship match against No. 15 Braden Atwood of Purdue. The redshirt sophomore from Waterloo, Iowa went 3-0 on the day with wins over Abe Graziano (Pin; 6:49) of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Timmy McCall (dec. 5-1) of Wisconsin and Tomas Lira (dec. 8-3) of Iowa. With the three wins, Gadson remains perfect on the year as his record moves to 5-0.
"Kyven was pulled before the championship match for precautionary reasons," Jackson said. "He is fine. Both him and Mike still have room for growth, which really excites me."
Redshirt freshmen Logan Molina finished fourth at 157 pounds. Molina started the day 3-0 with wins over Taylor Berger (Northern Iowa), Jacob Gingerich (Illinois) and Pat Smith (Minnesota). He then lost a tight match 2-1 in the semifinals to eventual champion Dave Bonin (Northern Iowa). In the consolation championship match for third place, Molina dropped a 7-4 decision to Zach Brunson (Illinois).
Another notable finish today was true freshmen Gabe Moreno. The Urbandale, Iowa native competed unattached for Iowa State finishing fifth at 149 pounds. Moreno won his first two matches of the day with a tech fail over Drew Niebuhr (Unattached) 18-2 and an 8-1 decision over Cameryn Brady (Indianapolis). Moreno lost to eventual champion Jason Tsirtsis (Northwestern) 6-2 in the quarterfinals. He then battled back to shutout and beat Tom Giaimo 6-0 in the fifth place match at 149 pounds.
