IOWA CITY, Iowa – In the 35th meeting of the Iowa and Iowa State women's swimming and diving programs, the Cyclones (5-2, 1-0 Big 12) fell to the Hawkeyes (3-2, 2-2 B1G) on Friday, 206-94.
Iowa got off to a quick start, winning the first six events on the evening, but Iowa State senior Amanda Paulson ended the streak by touching first in the 50 freestyle in a season best time of 0:23.11. Paulson's win was number 18 on the season and the 83rd of her decorated career.
Fellow senior Sarah Deis also posted a veteran performance in her final Cy-Hawk meet, reaching the wall in a time of 1:51.01 during the 200 freestyle, moving her to 11th in the Iowa State record books.
The Cyclone underclassmen stepped up with notable individual performances, as Kasey Roberts recorded fourth, fourth and fifth-best times in school history in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.19), 200 IM (2:02.56) and 200 breaststroke (2:15.91), respectively. Mary Kate Luddy's time of 2:03.61 in the 200 butterfly launched the freshman to fifth all-time in Iowa State history.
“Kasey swam two lifetime bests in the 100 breaststroke, her 200 breast was a lifetime best by almost four seconds and her 200 IM was just off her lifetime best by four-one-hundredths of a second. Outstanding job on her part,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “Mary Kate had two lifetime bests, but I think we can get a lot more out of her racing.”
Junior Elyse Brouillette led the Cyclones on the boards with a second-place 273.68-point performance in the one-meter event. Brouillette also took fourth on the three-meter board with a 289.35.
“I think she getting back on track. Everyone goes through slumps now and then,” Iowa State head diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “This is a good indication that she's breaking out of that slump. She's not where I know she can be yet, but we're heading in that direction.”
