CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team fell to Illinois, 168-132, Friday night in the ARC Pool, dropping the Cyclones to 5-3 overall on the season. Heading into the matchup, Iowa State had only lost one road dual dating back to the start of the 2013-14 season.
“We didn't have crisp turns and didn't finish well, so it's just a matter of doing a better job on the details, because it's a meet we easily could have won,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said after the meet.
The momentum swung in Illinois' favor early in the meet, as the Illini claimed the first four events on the evening, but Iowa State freshman Kasey Roberts raced to a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.16 to end the streak. Roberts also posted a second-place performance in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:20.54.
“After training trip, myself included, the whole team is just getting back at it on campus. We're all really tired,” Roberts said, “but I'm proud of how everyone powered through it at the end and had a really good meet overall.”
The Illini carried an 85-65 lead into the first break, but the Cyclones responded with first-place performances by Amanda Paulson in the 100 free (0:51.87), Marissa Engel in the 200 back (2:01.70) and Karyl Clarete in the 500 free after the break (5:01.28).
“We talked about the back-half – back-halving our races and back-halving the meet,” Iowa State assistant head coach Kelly Nordell said. “They take a lot of pride in that, and they just stepped up and got a little more energy for those first few races after the break.”
In the diving well, Iowa State sophomore Julie Dickinson posted first and second-place performances on the one and three-meter boards with scores of 259.57 and 270.90, respectively.
