AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team defeated Northern Iowa, 197-99, Friday night in Beyer Hall, improving to 6-3 overall on the season and remaining 1-0 in conference dual meets. ISU extended its all-time series lead over the Panthers to 23-1, with 21 consecutive victories over the in-state foe.
The Cyclones led, 92-39, heading into the first break, taking first-place in five of the first seven events, including sweeps in the 200 medley relay, 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle.
“I was pleased with the way that we raced. In the close races we seemed to get a lot of the touch-out wins,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. “Up and down, we really raced the way that we need to race.”
Iowa State senior Amanda Paulson started the day with 92 career wins – individual and relay – and finished the meet with 96 after taking the 200 medley relay (1:45.76), 50 freestyle (0:23.62), 100 butterfly (0:57.32) and 200 freestyle relay (1:36.34). Paulson will have a chance to clinch career win No. 100 as she is scheduled to compete in four events tomorrow against West Virginia.
“As I was watching her swim, I turned to a teammate, and I said, 'I'm just taking this in because I know there are only a few more opportunities for me to watch this,'” assistant head coach Kelly Nordell said of Paulson. “She's so powerful, yet so graceful, and you just don't do what she's done for four years. You just don't find people like that.”
The Cyclones finished as strongly as they started, winning all eight events after the break, highlighted by a sweep of the 200 backstroke by Iowa State's Marissa Engel (2:04.98), Kaylee Kucera (2:07.93) and Harper Emswiler (2:13.56).
Elyse Brouillette and the Iowa State divers took care of business in the diving well, taking first and second-place on each board. Brouillette led the way for the Cyclones, taking first in both the one and three-meter events with scores of 285.00 and 278.48 respectively.
Sophomore Julie Dickinson recorded a pair of runner-up performances with scores of 264.15 and 272.55 in the one and three-meter events, respectively.
“Julie had great performances on both boards, she is doing really well,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “Elyse did a really good job of stepping up on one-meter.”
On Deck:
The Cyclones will be back in the water in Beyer Hall on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. to welcome conference opponent West Virginia. Eight seniors will be recognized before the start of the last home dual meet of their Iowa State careers.
