STILLWATER, Okla.-The Iowa State soccer team (6-5, 0-1) lost its conference opener Friday night 1-0 in a tightly contested match in Stillwater, Okla. to the Oklahoma State Cowgirls (5-6, 1-0). The Cyclones round out their weekend with another conference match against Baylor on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Turning Point of the Game
In the 29th minute, Oklahoma State's Kelsey Bass took a corner kick from the far right side. Instead of the routine corner kick that results in a header of deflection Bass was able to hook the ball into the back corner of the net scoring a goal and giving the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead. Iowa State came very close to the equalizer on multiple occasions, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Haley Albert. The senior has found her niche with headers inside the box and setting up teammates. Albert nearly scored a goal in the first half, but her shot bounced off the top of the cross bar. Throughout the game she strategically placed headers that put her teammates in good positions to score.
Coach Said It
"It was a tough loss," head coach Tony Minatta said. "We lost Madi Ott right before the game and then Sasha Stinson eight minutes in. So being down two starters in our back line, I thought we stepped up and played well. We shut them out through the run of play and had the unfortunate goal in the first half, which was ultimately the game winner. I am very proud of how the team rebounded from last weekend and showed the type of team we really are tonight. Time to put this behind us and focus on Baylor."
Game Notes
*Goalkeeper Andrea Swanson recorded six saves. She now has 199 in her career.
*Iowa State is now 5-11 all-time in conference openers.
